Surfshark is one of the cheapest VPNservices on the market, but at the same time has not compromised on quality. Both security and anonymity are top notch, as modern open-source encryption is used and no data about the users is stored.

You can freely choose the encryption protocol and so on obfuscation to with No Borders, which prevents blocking of VPN on monitored networks. The download speed is high at +300 Mbit / s and it is allowed to use P2P file sharing.

With servers in 65 countries, most needs are probably covered, but since there are VPNservices with multiple servers, unfortunately pure top marks cannot be achieved.

In return, there is Smart DNS included in the price, which makes it possible to use Surfshark on smart TV, Xbox, Playstation, Apple TV etc.

The cheapest Surfshark subscription costs DKK 20 (€ 2.67) per month (two years for a total of DKK 479 (€ 64.09)).

The cheapest Surfshark subscription costs $ 2.49 (€ 2.14) per month (two years for a total of $ 59.76 (€ 51.27).

Safety

Surfshark VPN uses the encryption protocols IKEv2 / IPsec, OpenVPN and WireGuard with the AES-256-GCM algorithm, which should be faster than AES-256. The 256-bit encryption algorithm is virtually impossible to break and the selected protocols are all open-source, so there are absolutely no fingers to put on Surfshark's security.

You don't have to just take their word for it, as they have had a security check conducted by Cure53.de in 2018 and 2021, which was passed with a few minor and seemingly insignificant remarks. You can read the summary of the check here.

You can choose the encryption protocol in the client program and you can also dial No Borders to, which hides that one uses VPN (obfuscation). The latter may be necessary if you experience not being able to get online when VPN is turned on.

You can also turn on killswitch, which completely disconnects the internet connection if the connection to VPNthe server is smoking.

anonymity

An anonymous VPN service protects the privacy of its customers by not logging in using the service. By not storing data about what customers are doing, the service can not provide information that can be used to identify a user.

Surfshark's Privacy Policy states:

Surfshark respects your privacy, therefore we are committed not to process any information related to the online activity of our users. Surfshark is based in the jurisdiction, which does not require information storage or reporting. We do not collect any information about what you do online (your visited IP addresses, browsing history, session information, used bandwidth, connection time stamps, network traffic or any other similar information).

Surfshark does not log data that can be used to identify users. By not saving visited IP addresses or browsing history, it is not possible to document that a user has visited a website or the like. In fact, no data is even logged that can prove that the user has been connected to Surfshark at all.

It also says:

Our servers do store information about your connection to a particular VPN server (user ID and connection time stamps), BUT this information is automatically deleted within 15 minutes after termination of your session. And be assured that no information is stored about the websites you visit.

Thus, short-term information is stored that tells that the user has been connected to a specific VPNserver at a given time. In principle, the information can be used to connect a user to the IP address of the server to which he or she has been connected. However, the data is deleted 15 minutes after the connection is disconnected, so in practice it does not go beyond a normal VPNuser anonymity.

Servers

With Surfshark you can connect to servers in 65 countries and in several countries such as USA, Australia etc. there are servers in several cities. Therefore, it is usually possible to find a server where one needs it.

Exist VPNservices with servers in several countries, but Surfshark's locations probably cover most needs. If you have a special need for locations, you can always check Surfshark servers.

For Danish customers, it is a big plus that there are servers in Denmark. Then you can both get a Danish IP address and achieve maximum speed if you are in Denmark.

user interface

Surfshark's interface is simple and intuitive without too many frills. You select the server from a drop-down list that contains the available countries and cities. You can also choose the easy solution and connect to the fastest server or nearest country.

You can also choose MultiHop , where the connection to the server at the end station is via a server in another country.

The settings are quite clear and it is easy to change the encryption protocol if you have a preference for that kind. You can also with a single click hide that you are using at all VPN, by hitting No Borders to. The latter may be necessary if one experiences not having access to the network when VPN is turned on. In that case, it may be that the network is monitored and blocked VPNconnections.

Network Speed

The speed was tested with speedtest.net by connecting to the fastest VPNserver. The download speed of 338 Mbit / s is at the high end of what one can expect, so it is absolutely approved. The ping time was also low with only 13 ms, which is actually as low as without VPN.

VPN will inevitably be a bottleneck, so if you have a fast internet connection, do not count on full speed. However, over 300 Mbit / s download is plenty fast for most things.

Be aware that speed typically decreases with increasing distance between user and VPNserver. Therefore, it is a good idea to connect to a server close by if you want maximum speed.

Note that one test was performed on one server and that it is of course possible that not all Surfshark servers are equally fast.

P2P /BitTorrent

Some VPNservices block file sharing with Bittorrent, but not Surfshark. P2P was tested by downloading the free operating system Ubuntu via Bittorrent and it worked without problems.

Smart DNS

As one of quite a few VPNservices, provides Surfshark Smart DNS included in a regular subscription. Smart DNS is a slightly overlooked feature that provides more options compared to streaming.

You can not install one VPNclient smart TV, Xbox, PlayStation, Apple TV, etc., but you can use well Smart DNS. That way one can use Smart DNS to access foreign streaming services on the above devices.

Smart DNS is a little more hassle to use than VPN, as you have to mess around a bit in the network settings. However, it is relatively straightforward for Surfshark to have provided fine guides to use Smart DNS on e.g. Apple TV, Samsung TV og LGTV.

It must be emphasized that Smart DNS does not replace VPN, because the connection is not encrypted and its IP address is not hidden either. But for streaming, it's absolutely perfect.

DNS leak test

A DNS leak test involves revealing whether the user's own IP address is being used for DNS queries. A DNS query is made each time a website is visited and if VPNthe "delicious" service compromises the user's anonymity by revealing the IP address.

The test is easily performed on DNSleaktest.com and is passed if you only see VPNthe IP address and name of the service. If you see your ISP in the test (and VPN is turned on), then a DNS leak occurs and the test is dumped.

As can be seen in the image below, Surfshark manages a DNS leak test with flying colors.
