What is a router?
If an internet connection is to be shared by several devices such as PCs, smartphones, TVs, coffee machines, etc., the sharing is handled technically by a router. The router is a piece of hardware that keeps track of the local network (which consists of all devices connected to the router) and makes sure that the data packets to and from the Internet end up in the right places. The devices are connected to the router, the router is connected to the modem and the modem is connected to the ISP.
On a regular broadband connection in the home, the connection to the Internet is established and managed with one modem. A modem is a piece of hardware that handles the flow of data to and from the Internet through the ISP.
Once the modem and router were separate devices, but nowadays the router is built into the modem you get from your ISP. It is usually a Wi-Fi router that you can connect your devices to both wirelessly and with a power cable.
Pros and cons of using VPN-router
There are most benefits to using one VPN-router in the home, but there are also disadvantages:
Advantage: All devices are automatically protected by the router VPN-connection
Without one VPN-router it is necessary to connect each device to one VPNserver. Of course, this also means that one has to install VPNclients on all the devices you want to use VPN on.
It is not necessary if one uses one VPN-router. Since all the router's data traffic goes through VPNserver, this also applies to the data traffic to and from all devices connected to the router.
This makes it easy and efficient to use VPN at home, as one does not have to connect every single device. That way, there is also less risk of forgetting it.
Advantage: Use VPN on devices that cannot install one VPNclient on
You can not install VPNclients on e.g. smart TV, Apple TV, PlayStation, Xbox and Roku, but you can achieve exactly the same result by using one VPN-router. As already described, all devices on the router's network are automatically protected by VPNconnection.
In addition to securing the connection against surveillance and censorship, so hide VPN also the device's IP address on the Internet. By using one VPN-router rather than one VPNapp on the device, you also move the power consumption to the router. This way, you avoid the increased consumption on your smartphone or tablet, so the battery lasts a little longer.
Disadvantage: Difficult to beat VPN off on a single device (can be avoided)
Occasionally you may need to hit VPN from. Eg. one may experience not being able to access online banking or the like, with one VPN-connection. In that situation, one must have beaten VPNconnection, but it can be a bit cumbersome if you are online with one VPN-router. This will usually require you to log into the router's menu and either disconnect VPNconnection completely, which also includes the other devices on the network, or only for the individual device.
One way to avoid this problem is to have two local area networks at home: A regular network without VPN and one protected with VPN (dual router VPN setup). Do you need to strike VPN from for a single device, you just connect it to the network without VPN.
Disadvantage: The connection between the device and the router is not protected
With a VPN-router, the connection between the device and the router is not encrypted, which in principle is a weakness in security. However, it is only on the home network that the device is unprotected, so for most it is insecure enough to live with, but it is good to know.
You can of course use both VPN on the device and the router, but then some of the smartness of using one disappears VPN-router at all.
Disadvantage: It requires a little pilling to use VPN-router
As a starting point, the router from your ISP can unfortunately not be used as VPN-router. You will usually need to acquire a suitable router yourself and then configure VPNthe connection on it and make it work with the hardware from your ISP (modem).
It's not rocket science to get one VPN-router up to run, but it requires a bit of "pilling", so you have to spend time messing with it.
Which routers can be used for VPN?
Not all routers are born equal and therefore not all of them are equally suitable as VPNrouters. VPN encryption requires resources in the form of processing power and memory to encode and decode data. Therefore, only resource-intensive routers with a strong CPU and a lot of RAM can be used in practice.
You can really install one VPNclient on many routers, but since they are not designed for it, the connection will most likely be significantly slower. It is beyond the scope of this article to list system requirements or specific suitable routers, but it will generally require a router at the expensive end.
Basically, one should go for routers that have been given one by the manufacturer VPNclient built-in. It also makes it easier to get configured VPNconnection, which is not quite as user-friendly as most VPNapps.
Another option is to purchase a pre-configured router that comes prepared for VPN, which makes setting up somewhat easier.
Dual router setup with VPN
With one dual router setup with VPN do you have two home networks resp. with and without VPN, which uses the same internet connection. It therefore requires two routers; and alm. router (without VPN) and one VPN-router.
The advantage of a dual router setup is that you can be online with or without VPN without having to mess with the routers' settings or turn on VPN from for the entire network. Would like to use VPN on your device, you connect to VPNrouter and would like to be online without VPN, you connect to the regular router. That way, you can quickly change as needed.
As a rule, you already have one router; namely the one one has received from his ISP. You can buy the other router yourself, but you will usually still need it if you want one VPN-router.
Guide to dual router setup
If would like a dual router setup, it's actually pretty straightforward. The routers must be physically connected correctly to each other, and then you must make sure that there are no conflicts on the network.
VPNthe router must have its own local network "behind" the primary router, and therefore it is usually necessary to change VPNrouter's IP address settings. Specifically, make sure that the two routers use different subnet. Otherwise, conflicts arise between the IP addresses of the two networks with the result that VPNthe router cannot connect to the Internet.
You usually need not tamper with the settings on the regular router that you are already using. It's just on VPNthe router that needs to change a single setting. Therefore, there is no immediate risk that you will get bogged down in something so that you can not make your internet work or the like. If you remove VPNthe router, everything is as before.
Wait to think VPN to the new router is connected to the primary / existing router and you can connect to the Internet through it.
The starting point of the guide is that you already have a router connected to the Internet. In addition, you need an ordinary. network cable, a PC and not least a router you would like VPN on.
Locate the primary router's subnet
The first step is to find out which subnet your primary router is using, so you can choose another one later in the setup VPNrouters. If you already know your router's IP address, you can go directly to Step 3.
- Connect to your primary router's network with a PC.
- Find the router's IP address:
- Open the command line by entering “cmd” in the search field or by opening “run” with Windows + R and entering “cmd”.
- Enter “ipconfig”
- You will see a printout on the screen and in one place it says “Default Gateway” and an IP address which is the router.
- Start “System Settings”, go to “Network> Advanced” and select “TCP / IP”.
- The router's IP address is next to "Router IP"
- The third place in the router's IP address is its subnet. If it says 192.168.1.1 is the router's subnet 1, it says 192.168.0.1 is its subnet 0 and so on.
- Write down the router's IP address or simply its subnet.
Preparation of VPNrouters
Before connecting secondary router (the one that should be VPN-router) to the primary router, it must be set up. This is easiest to do by connecting directly to the new router with a PC.
Steps 1-5 go to resetting the router to the factory settings. If it is already, or if you do not want to reset it, you can skip directly to step 4. If the router is already configured, you can skip step 5, but before proceeding, set the router to “router mode”.
- Turn on the secondary router and give it a minute or two until it finishes booting.
- Reset the router by holding down the reset button for 10-12 seconds. This step ensures that the router has default settings.
- The button should be relatively easy to find somewhere on the router.
- After reset, the router restarts and after startup you should be able to connect to its wireless network with a PC.
- It can either be open or protected with a login that should be on the router somewhere. Alternatively, you can connect to it with a network cable.
- Open a browser on your PC and enter the router's IP address. Then log in with the combination of username and password that is on the router.
- ASUS and Linksys usually use the address 192.168.1.1 and Netgear 192.168.0.1. If none of the suggestions work, you can use the same method we used to find the IP address of the primary router.
- Since this is the first time you log in to the router, you may need to go through a wizard where you set the Wifi password etc. Follow the steps and be sure to select the router in "router mode" if prompted.
- Now you need to find where in the router's menu, you change its IP address and thus also its subnet. Depending on the router, it is done in different places:
- ASUS: LAN> LAN IP> IP Address. (Link to ASUS guide)
- DD-WRT: Setup> Basic Setup> Local IP Address
- Linksys: Setup> Basic Setup> Network Setup> IP Address (Link to Linksys' guide)
- Netgear: ADVANCED> Setup> LAN Setup> IP Address. (Link to Netgear's guide)
- Other routers: Look for similar menu items or find it on the manufacturer's website
- Change the router's IP address so that it uses a different subnet (the third number in the address) than your primary router.
- It (almost) does not matter what you change it to, as long as it differs from your primary routers subnet that you found earlier. However, it must be an integer between 0 and 255.
- VPNthe router's IP is most likely 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1 by default. If you change its subnet to 2 by changing the IP address to 192.168.2.1, it will usually not conflict with your primary router.
- Once you have changed the subnet is VPNthe router ready to have its own network behind the primary router.
Connect VPNthe router to the primary router
- Power off VPNrouters.
- Connect the routers with a network cable that connects a LAN port on the primary router to the WAN port on VPNthe router (see figure below). The WAN port is called "Internet port" on some routers.
- Switch on VPNrouters.
- Once the startup is complete, your dual router setup should work. You can test it by connecting to its Wifi and see if you can go online.
If it does not work as expected, try switching off all network devices (routers and modems) and turning them on again. Otherwise, you can go through the steps to see if you got it done as it said, because then it should work!
